CHAPTER FOUR

The Art of War, For Dummies, and Zombies.

The next morning, Zhane went back to the workshop and found his fourteen footlong spider-bot drones being remotely tested by Sai who was doing quality control and refinement.

“These aren’t bad considering what you had to work with,” Sai said.

“We can use them to scavenge outside for small stuff, within a seven-hundred-and-sixty-one-meter radius.”

“What are my orders for today?” Sai asked.

“For now, use these to build more advanced drones for restoring this building. This base is far from adequate. We want to get to the point where our tools make ever better tools.”

“Got it.”

With a gasoline container strapped to his back, Zhane went to the roof and zipped down toward the Camping World store, the wind in his mane as he dangled. Landing, he went down into the building and got busy, selecting a gas generator, setting it up, filling up its tank. He got it running, a loud, annoying sound, and ran lines to the building power system. Soon, he had lights. The next job on his list was getting the elevator operational. After that, he separated items, deciding on priorities, and piled supplies up on the roof to be zip-lined back to the casino.

Before he knew it, ten in the morning arrived along with Jamal and the others. No one said a word, getting hard at work. Two hours went by without Zhane even saying a word.

Marcus finally said. “I saw your designs on those data-pads you left for us. I assume we need to make a run to a supply depot?”

The we part stood out to Zhane. He looked at Marcus a second and nodded his head. “Know a good place?”

“Follow me,” Marcus said.

Zhane put down his load of tool boxes and followed Marcus to the elevator. It took them up to the second floor. They continued to the roof and zipped back to the casino. Marcus led the way to the sixth floor and went into a room facing away from the river.

The room had been cleaned. A set of binoculars lay by a window. Marcus handed them to Zhane and pointed toward the east. “Next to the train tracks, a miles from here. See all those huge construction trucks and other equipment?”

Zhane looked out at huge yellow machines, many he’d already seen holographically thanks to Sai.

Marcus continued. “The warehouses all around that area were distribution companies of different kinds, almost all of them construction oriented.”

“That’s a lot of shipping containers as well.” Zhane studied the whole area including the numerous shipping containers still on the train tracks. A lot of them were already placed on sprawling parking lots for storage.

“You want to use them?” Marcus asked.

Zhane touched his bracer and a holographic map of the area appeared.

Amazed, Marcus stared intently.

With his hands, Zhane shifted holographic images, using containers to created a wall going from the river, right next to the bridge, surrounding all the local boardwalk buildings, including some empty fields for cultivation.

“Cool.” Marcus said.

“Let’s go talk to the others,” Zhane said.
